It wasn't that her and Dmitri were actively trying to have a baby. Sure, they wanted one of their own, but Gavin kept them more than busy enough. Especially recently. He'd started teething on top of having an inner ear infection, so when he wasn't crying about one it was the other, keeping them all up night, every night, and then tense during the way, waiting for another outburst.
Being his mother, Wisp felt absolutely awful that there really wasn't much she could do for the teething. With the antibiotics his pediatrician had prescribed, he was doing a little better there, but there wasn't much to be done other than handing him a teething ring when his gums started hurting him.
So no, they really weren't trying to have another baby already. But they weren't exactly taking plans against it, either. Gavin was a handful, yes, and he needed a lot of their time, yes. But ever since her and Dmitri had met, they'd admitted they wanted their children to be relatively close in age so they could grow up together.
And so it wasn't really all that worrying or shocking when Wisp missed her period. Truthfully, she'd always been rather irregular. The second week she took more notice. The third week she counted the days. She kept an eye out. But it wasn't really until nearly a month and a half later that she finally did something about it.
Her and Dmitri were laying in bed, sated and content in each other's arms, and he made a soft noise. "You... haven't had your period in a while, have you?" he murmured against her hair.
She gave a little yawn and shook her head, and that was all they said on the matter for the night. In the morning, Wisp went out and bought a pregnancy test while Dmitri watched over Gavin. And despite everything, as she waited for it to process, a nervous pit formed in her stomach. She knew if she was -- and she knew she was -- Dmitri would be ecstatic. She knew they were financially stable enough to support another child. She knew she wanted another. But it was still a nerve-wrecking process.
So when the two little lines showed up, she let out a shakey breath and took the capped test out of the bathroom with her. Dmitri looked up, a little smile pulling at his lips, and she could read the hope in his handsome face. It eased her nerves, and she returned a smile of her own, holding up the test.
"I'm pregnant!"
